DIY Neutral Felt Leaf Garland: A Cozy Autumn Home Decor Craft

Create a cozy autumn home decor craft today following these simple directions to make a DIY neutral felt leaf garland This is an easy project to make following my step-by-step tutorial.

Today, I’m excited to share my first new Fall DIY project for this year. Introducing my latest creation: a stunning Felt Leaf Garland that brings the warmth of autumn indoors.

As I guide you through this simple and delightful craft, prepare to infuse your home with charm and coziness.

Felt Leaf Garland: Step-by-Step

Materials:

• 10 Brown & Gray Soft Felt Sheets (comes in a set)
• Braided Jute Rope 3.5 mm
• Leaf Template Download
• Fabric Scissors
• Hot Glue Gun
• Gorilla Hot Glue Sticks (the best!)

Neutral Felt

To make this leaf garland I bought a set of neutral felt sheets from Amazon that had 10 different brown and gray shades. It also has a combo of soft and stiff felt sheets.

For this garland, I am using only the soft felt sheets in the set. The softer felt looks better for a garland. (But save the stiffer felt shapes because we will be making a matching wreath with them later this week.)

I loved that it was all prepackaged in complementary colors to make this project even easier.

If neutral colors aren’t your thing then any combination of your favorite Fall colors can be substituted. This garland could also be made with just one single color of felt.

Leaf Template

To make this leaf garland even easier I whipped up a template to use to cut out the leaf shapes from the felt. There are 4 leaf templates in case you have someone to help you cut the felt.

Cut Out Felt Leaves

The felt sheets that I am using are 8.5 x 11.5 and I was able to cut out 8 leaf shapes on each one,

There was no real method except that I tried not to waste any of the felt and moved the leaf around to try and get the most leaves out of each piece.

I cut 2 sheets of each color. To make this part go quicker I stacked the felt and cut both sheets together.

**If you have strong scissors you can probably stack 4 sheets of the felt (2 sheets of 2 different colors).**

When you are finished you want 16 leaves in each color. So 160 leaves for the garland we are making today.

This will make a 6-foot-long garland when it is finished. To make a shorter garland then make 10, 12, or 14 leaves in each color (or any smaller even number)

Glue Leaves In Half

To make the pretty leaf shape run a small bead of hot glue down the middle at the bottom of the felt.

Then fold the felt leaf in half and hold until the hot glue sets up. Be careful when working with hot glue as you can burn yourself, I would suggest using silicone finger protectors when working with hot glue guns.

For this part of the project, I worked with one color of felt leaves at a time and glued all 16 in half. If you wanted to glue all of the leaves for this project in half before you start the assembly then have at it!!

For me I get bored so I worked on each color and then assembled that part of the garland…you do you!!

Assemble Garland

To make this felt garland I am using a jute rope that is thinner than nautical rope but not as thin as jute twine.. It will be hidden by the felt leaves but it is pliable.

Assemble The Leaf Garland

Now for the fun part, seeing the garland come together!

Leave a tail of the jute rope and start your first set of leaves about 6 inches from the end.

Run a bead of hot glue on the inside of a leaf and press it into the rope.

Then flip it over and repeat with the matching leaf on the other side of the rope.

This is what it should look like when both of the leaves are attached.

The trick is to place the next set of leaves close to the set before it so that they will overlap.

The entire process goes pretty quickly. Just have extra glue sticks at the ready because you will be using a few sticks for this project.

Neutral Felt Fall Leaf Garland

Here is the finished garland!! Doesn’t it look cool??!! It comes out about 6 feet long too so perfect for running across your mantle or down your dining room table.

Don’t you love just how cozy the felt looks? The neutral, earthy colors give this felt garland a more modern look too…not so “in your face Fall”!
